Personal Statement For Physiotherapy

Let the weak say I am strong.  I was once riddled in pain, bound by the shackles of my own body. My own muscles fought against me. Strength I had not, only pain. As if my prayers were answered, my chiropractor Dr Timothy restored my strength through his treatment, my aunty, as a physiotherapist, taught me exercises to keep getting stronger. I have learnt that the weak can be strong. Now, I aspire to let the weak and hopeless find their new resolve.

I hear their cries and moans. I listen to them, hoping to be a refuge for their agony. Helping my mother in her dialysis centre at the National Kidney Foundation of Singapore (NKF), I discovered the void behind their affliction, pleading to be lifted, momentary I was helpless. Now having graduated from junior college, and finally able to pick an university major that I want to pursue. I will do whatever it takes to be strong and capable, learning as much as I can to excel in my physiotherapy profession.

As a former member of the 11th Student Council, having served Dunearn Secondary School, I ploughed through the nights staying back in school till the late hours of the evening, continuing to endure sleepless nights to complete my homework only to repeat the same arduous routine for a new event. Looking back at the endurance I had, I pride myself  in planning for events such as Prom Night and Secondary 1 Orientation Camp. I have seen the once strong and abled men and women, now taking baby steps and falling, because life’s misfortune had hit them suddenly.  Would I abandon their exercise routine simply because it is time for me to clock out of work? Not until my patient has taken his first step to signify more to come, that life for him can return, as he had lived it, or even better.

Progressing to Junior College, I was part of the Class Leader Committee (CLC). During the O level open house admission, I not only led the parents and O Level graduates to see their respective subject heads, I went out of my way to give some curious parents a tour of the school as they wanted to see the facilities. It was exhausting to fulfill the wishes of these parents, then attend to those that just arrived at the school. However, it was my duty as a CLC member to completely satisfy the needs of these parents and graduates before making a crucial decision in their lives. I centred my attention on these students and parents, even though it is more troublesome and tiring because their decisions for their future in life is of surmount importance compared to my convenience. The wellbeing of my patients comes first compared to my time and energy, even if I have to break my usual routine to fit theirs to see them heal completely. My eyes must see them rise up from their mishaps, rise up to strength again.

Having lived through the rigorous education system of Singapore, I have endured tough school days and dreaded nights rushing to complete my assignments. In addition, I had to attend tuition classes to ensure my grades were the best it can get. Despite the entirety of more than ten years trudging through the pain of studying, my efforts were not entirely rewarded. I had to persist through the reality that the results of my national exams were sub par to the agony I bore with the days and nights ascertaining academic excellence. Now with newfound determination and strength, I am willing to face this torment all over again. This time, not only for myself. This time, for my future patients.
As an aspiring physiotherapist, my greatest wish is to see my future patients leave my office finding new strength in their lives. I will spend as much time needed to see my patients through, expecting them to restart their lives renewed. Having received help to regain my weakness, I shall now be able to transfer the strength to those who may have been deprived or may have thought the end of their lives.  Let the weak say I am strong.

Personal Statement For Engineering

The ingenuity of the towering Burj Khalifa to the miniature thumb drive fascinates and inspires me. I am eager to be the mind of the engineer who can create a better place for the society, the mind of inquisitiveness who looks at every facet and wonder how to make it better, one prototype after another.

I am fascinated by the sciences. In secondary school, I was selected for the Science Ambassador Programme (SAP) by my science teacher, who caught me completing the chemistry questions ahead of the class, out of my impatience to learn more. Since then in the SAP, I built captivating things such as a PET Rocket out of a soft drink bottle, that flew across a football field. I shared the beauty of science with others as a volunteer at the Science Centre Singapore. All good things come to an end, but this marks a new beginning for applying the sciences I learnt in secondary school and junior college to solve problems and build wonders that the world can only awe.

During Secondary School, I participated in the Singapore Amazing Flying Machine Competition with my seniors. We learnt and applied the basics of aerodynamics, building both a glider and an aeroplane with a toy motor with the balsa wood parts given. Despite the disagreements and the afternoon fatigue while building the planes, both designs were successful in taking off. Although we ascertained certificates of participation, I have since learnt the satisfaction of cooperating in a group, regardless of the results; the victory of the experience is better savoured when shared amongst many.

In Junior College, I was part of the entrepreneurship club.We developed a handphone app as part of the Junior Achievement (JA) Company of the Year Programme in year 2017. In year 2018, we had to promote our product in the form of a booth. We thought quickly on our feet, setting up the stall to selling our product to the judges. Although our team lost the competition due to the lack of profit, we enjoyed working together and improvising on the spot. This competition has sharpened my ability to be resourceful and improvise under pressure, which vital for an engineer.

In the very near future, as an engineer, I am not only able to troubleshoot issues that arise in the company I might be working for, I desire to innovate a faster Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) train or a new fancy machine to improve the living standards of our society.

Project Coffee Business Proposal

Coffee is one of my favourite beverages. When milk is added, the texture is just amazing! Some of you might agree with me, some of you think I have broken one of the commandments of drinking good coffee. However, one thing is for sure, we all drink coffee. As one of the most widely consumed drinks around the world, there is a lot of waste, from grounds to coffee bags. What if, things don’t have to be this way. What if we can use the remainder of what we drink for good.

I can share with you one of my ideas. I think coffee bags are awesome, not just for coffee beans. After all, coffee beans are coffee seeds anyway am I right? I want to recycle coffee bags from cafes such as Starbucks and other artisan cafes to grow seeds rather than dispose of them. Coffee bags collected will be used as a seed starter. Replace used coffee beans with compost and place a seed of your choice and you are good to go! It really is so simple. Even I have difficulty making a presentation because of this simplicity.

Anyone can do this, from children to elderly and anybody in between too busy working to be here today. Creating a seed starter has costs that are almost negligible since the bulk of items used are recycled from cafes, except a few minutes of your time and a little bit of love.

Is this too good to be true? Is this a scam? I can bluntly tell you these answers. It is too good to be true to even be a scam. Planting a seed should not be labrous nor costly. A coffee bag will decompose inevitably, leaving behind a plant of your choice. A testimony of your time and love.

For those here listening and thinking whether you can make this better, I encourage you to explore more recycling opportunities instead of this one. I challenge you to make planting fruits, vegetables, even trees as simple as possible for a greener future. Thank you.

Project To Promote A Product

Microwaves! Big, bulky and slowly becoming outdated. Who wants to spend money on a chunk of metal just to heat up food? With my genius team, we propose a modern solution to a traditional problem.

(takes out product) This rectangular bowl you see here is not just a regular bowl. Our team has reinvested this humble container made with recycled plant material to make sure that your food stays warm, or being cooked even on the go! Our mini heating coils in the lid and around the inside of the bowl provides heat for you to enjoy your food at your desired temperature. Worried battery runs out? No issue! Hidden at the underside of the bowl there is a usb plug, just use our extender to connect to a power plug with another usb adaptor and you are done!

How to wash? So simple!  Mix washing detergent with water, shake and wipe dry! No hassle, no dishwasher.

With 6 coworkers behind my back,we are unstoppable. Working concurrently, our marketing wizard will gather data through an online survey, which will be shared by common social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook to our friends, who will share to many other people. In the meantime, our materials cost and everything else will be recorded by our finance guy and the rest of us create social media pages for our sale, our website along with clickfunnels.

After our survey results have ended, we can judge how many people are interested in our product, thus can order the quantity of materials accordingly. From there, we can partner with factories to help us create our product. Once a sizable amount of products are produced, we will start advertising our product through our existing network (friends, family etc.), place advertisements on our social media websites. While the three of us do that, the other three of us can obtain our initial sales and contact numbers through door to door (and share our social media too). As time passes, we are able to stop door to door sales and focus on sales and advertisements online, setting up affiliate links and paying people commissions who are interested to sell our product. Indeed, this is our masterplan.

This means that in the long run, we are able to reduce costs (less manpower needed but more effective) while increasing our sales, if everything goes to plan.

As for our human resource guy, once we start selling our products, he will address customer dissatisfaction and be obtain feedback to see how we can improve our product to minimise our future hassle (and make our product more dummy proof in the process).

Yea, let us not forget risk management in the company. Once our profits have become sort of stable, we can hire a risk manager to identify possible (and costly) future accidents in our process and tweak accordingly before expanding our product line.

As on how to pay our 6 coworkers bold enough to start this company with me, at first they will be paid through commissions. As our profits grow, they are able to take a small percentage of the profits we have earned (profit sharing).

As our factory for our products expands, we can start hiring homeless people to help us with creating our products (the shaping of the material to our famous rectangular bowls) and give them a new lease of life.

Human resource – also dealing with paychecks

Thank you directors for listening to my presentation. I assure you my product is of value in the marketplace and we will all be rich together!

How is competition a good way to develop character ?

Singapore, a country that grew rapidly from a humble fishing village to a bustling cosmopolitan city, still holds its competitiveness in the past, even until today. The excellence that we have in all aspects of life due to our strong conviction to succeed is also shown in the character of great men and women who are making our country proud. Not only did Singapore uphold the magnificence of our flag flying high and free, but also the quality  of its people.

Competition, despite its frenetic nature, needless to say spurs the drive of people to win. However, this drive may blossom into something more meaningful, bringing out the great resilience and tenacity of admirable athletes. The paralympic athletes of Singapore are an excellent example of these qualities as they still pursue their passion for the sports they love although they have lost the use of their hands and feet. This description fits an athlete Yip Pin Xiu, who lost  the use of both of her legs due to muscular dystrophy, an incurable disease that wastes away one’s muscles, leading to an inability to move one’s legs. Despite this curse that will plague her for life, she participated in the Women’s S2 Paralympics Backstroke event in Rio, returning home to Singapore with a second gold medal. This demonstrates her admirable resilience and tenacity that no matter how life seems to have treated her unfairly, she still has the strength to achieve even the wildest of things such as swimming, let alone, earning Singapore a gold medal. Thus, competition is a good way to develop character as it brings out the most improbable feats that a person can make, showing their mental prowess of resilience and tenacity.

Another way that competition brings out the best character, or rather their expressive talent, is through the competition among various companies. In order for one’s company to stand out, this company has to come up with innovative solutions to meet  its needs, hence bringing out the creative side of people. A company, AT&T, had decided to sponsor online creativity contests in order to obtain new original solutions and problems from the public in America. One of the creativity contests was The 2016 Inventor’s Challenge, participants had to end their invention ideas to AT&T in order to stand a chance to win tablets, accessories or even a visit to AT&T. This prompts the public who are interested to show off their creative capabilities to come up with an original solution to solve problems that are meaningful to them, yet at the same time, allows AT&T to adapt these ideas to solve problems in the market for example, sales, so that their company is able to stand out among the other solution providing companies.  Thus, competition among companies allows such creativity contests to blossom, granting the public the freedom to showcase their innovative talents which makes the world a more meaningful place to live as problems slowly dissolve, one by one.

However, there goes the saying by David Sarnoff, “Competition brings out the best in products and the worst in people”, which is unfortunately true in Singapore today. It is observable in our society today that competition allows “the cream of the crop” in education to shine, which plants the seeds of elitism in the soil of the education system. A student from the school of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) of Nanyang Technological University (NTU) came across an email which asked for motivational stories from the university’s undergraduates , which unfortunately includes stories from students from well known and well to do families such as from politicians, famous professors and celebrities. The email thus questions the meaning of meritocracy that Singapore has been trying to uphold in its education system, let alone, its principle of governance,“Reward for Work, Work for Reward”. This, therefore, shows that competition is a detrimental way of developing character as it develops the wrong type of character, elitism, in the students of Singapore.

In spite of this event, the top schools of the country have been trying to break the elitist concept in the country. The principle of the top school in Singapore, Raffles Institution, gave a speech to his staff and students that Raffles Institution is considered a middle school, along with the heavier responsibility of students to serve the community due to their greater aptitude in comparison to the rest of the citizens in the country. Hence, this may cause a potential shift in their mindset that they should not be insulant, but rather open and willing to help the society move forward to a higher level.

Having seen the various perspectives of Singapore, my curtain call to leave you is that competition is a good way to develop character. Competition truly makes people shine their virtues, to let the world learn from them so as to create a better society.
